Who doesn’t like buying new stuff?!? The euphoric feeling of a new purchase is one of the great joys of life. Whether it’s a new pair of shoes, a new piece of clothing, or a new TV, it feels good to buy stuff; and it’s who we are as consumers. But with a little patience, research, and discipline, we can get the most out of each dollar. When I buy something new and get it for a great price, mind blown… I feel like I just won something!
My shopping experience usually consists of checking a few sites for the best price –
- Amazon.com
- Walmart.com
- Samsclub.com or Costco.com (whichever you subscribe)
- Direct retailer – I am seeing better deals more often if I go directly to the retailer’s site
Between these sites, I can usually find what I am looking for at the best price, but I will check some other sites depending on the product to save ever more –
- Ebay.com – great option for finding items discounted from resellers – individuals who acquired the item and are looking to sell it less than retail; this can be new or used.
- Mecari.com – this is optimized as a mobile site; this can be new or used.
- Facebook Marketplace – local items for new and used.

Home Improvement –
One of the keys I find to getting the best price is to show some patience as a lot of my purchases are not urgent, and can wait. For example, if you are looking to buy a new piece of electronics, and if Black Friday is not that far away, consider waiting until then to make that purchase when a lot of items are deeply discounted.
Same thing with the home improvement stores, but we have more opportunities here – Memorial Day Weekend, Labor Day Weekend, 4th of July Weekend, Father’s Day.
Happy shopping Thriftconomists!
